Abstinence Education Program Curriculum - 8th Grade
(From
the Why kNOw? Abstinence Education Program)
Students will identify some emotional
and physical consequences (i.e. sexually transmitted diseases) of
premarital sex. They will examine the important differences
between human and animal sexuality. Students will discuss and
understand the difference between love and infatuation, and they
will learn to establish and maintain personal dating standards.
Students will discuss and practice ways to resist sexual temptation.
They will understand their value as a human being and learn that
they are worth waiting for. Students will also examine ways
the decisions of others can affect them and how their actions can
also affect others.
Daily Lesson Focus/Goals
- Guard Your Heart
- Students will understand the definition
of “abstinence.”
- Students will be able to identify some
consequences of premarital sex.
- Students will be able to identify some
rewards of saving sex for marriage.
- Students will understand why human sexual
bonding is different from animal mating.
- Students will define sex as a “total
person” experience, which begins with attraction.
- Sexually
Transmitted Diseases
- Students will compare the emotional and
physical effects of marriage and cohabitation.
- Students will become familiar with the
major STDs and the health risks involved.
- Is Love Greek To
You?
- Students will be able to define the four
Greek words for love.
- Students will be able to identify
benefits of having self-respect and self-control.
- Students will compare characteristics of
real love and infatuation and learn to distinguish the difference.
- Students will be able to define
“secondary virginity.”
- Students will begin to set standards for
future dating.
- Sexual
Progression
- Students will compare choices and
consequences of an abstinent role model to those of a person who
chooses to be sexually active.
- Students will be able to identify
benefits of self-respect and self-control.
- Students will be able to define “second
virginity.”
- Students will learn to recognize the
steps of sexual progression.
- Students will team up with others to
discuss and practice refusal skills.
- Students will be given practical
guidelines for future (abstinent) dating.
- Students will learn that abstinence
requires daily decisions.

- Students will understand how we assign
value.
- Students will be able to explain how
values guide our lives.
- Students will be encouraged to recognize
their special gifts and talents.
